Banana Mashbread

Banana Bread

Ingredients

1/2 cup solid vegetable shortening
3/4 cup sugar
1/4 Packed Brown Sugar
2 eggs
3/4 cup mashed ripe bananas
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/4 cups flour
1/2 cup walnuts
Pinch of cinnamon

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Oil and flour a 9x5x3-inch loaf pan.

Using an electric mixer, cream the shortening and sugar. With the mixer running on medium speed, add the eggs one at a time. (Crack the eggs in a bowl first to make sure shells don't get in) Add the bananas and mix well. Add the baking soda, salt, flour, nuts and cinnamon and mix tall the way. The bread dough will be sticky.

Pour the dough into the prepared pan and bake about one hour or until the center is brown and set.

Apple pie

Apple pie

Ingredients

Pie Crust:

2 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup vegetable shortening, room temperature
1 egg
2 tablespoons cold water
1 tablespoon white vinegar

Apple Filling:

5 Northern Spy apples
3/4 cup fine sugar
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon

Directions

Combine the flour and salt in mixing bowl. Cut room temperature shortening into flour until mixture is uniform and shortening resembles large peas. Beat egg, water, and vinegar together to blend. Pour all of the liquid evenly over flour mixture. Stir in with fork until all of the mixture is moistened. Divide dough in half and shape each into a ball. Flatten each into a 4-inch circle. Wrap and chill dough for 15 minutes for easier rolling.

Dust rolling pin and work surface lightly with flour. Roll dough to a uniform thickness. Roll to a circle about 1-inch larger than upside down 8-inch pie plate. Carefully place one dough circle into pie plate and gently press into form of plate. Trim excess dough around the edge with the back of a knife.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

Peel, core, and slice apples. Mix apple slices with sugar, flour, and cinnamon. Place apple mixture in pie shell. Place second pie crust on top and form to the edges of the pie plate. Cut slits in the top crust to allow for steam to release in oven. Bake for approximately 30 to 40 minutes, until pie is fully baked and apples are tender.

Meet Kit Vocabulary Words

These are my vocabulary words from the book I'm reading, 'Meet Kit'. Some of these I already understood, but some of them I had to look up.

Delicate: Something that is very special to you. (Could be breakable)

Swivel: to turn around. Like a chair spinning or a Lazy Susan. A Lazy Susan is a round flat plate that is big and spins around. You use it to set things on a table and everyone can easily reach the things on it. We have a Lazy Susan.

The Depression: When the money in America was not doing very good and many people lost their jobs and homes. A sad time when many people went without food too.

Factory: like a chocolate factory. A building for making things.

Terrace: An outdoor room, usually a raised floor that has stairs to the yard. People sometimes have breakfast or lunch on a terrace.

Nudge: like bumping or pushing someone to get their attention.

Propelled: to push forward

Abandoned: when you leave someone without telling them. To leave something aside.

Delighted: Very happy with.

Vigorously: energetic

Contradicting: to say the opposite of

Grateful: to be thankful and appreciate

Discouraged: a feeling of being sad about something you thought would be okay, but now is not.

Brainstorm: One little tiny thought that becomes a whole lot; a humongous idea.

Attic: a place where you usually store things you don't use very often and it's upstairs.

Unemployment: When someone loses their job and isn't working anymore.

I am reading... Meet Kit: An American Girl

I am Learning: In Spelling I am on list 4

Devotions: My sister Miss Monica June has a devotion called Obedience I want to obey my parents and this devotion helps me a lot!

Prayer: I am praying for my friend Georgia, her mom has cancer. My Uncle Sethy too, to get in God's will.

Baking: I helped my momy make brownies yesterday! They taste very yummy! We will post it on Growing In Grace this month.

Homesteading: I do the Kitchen with my Mommy, I love being with her!

Mathematics: I am learning multiplication I am on my 4 times tables!

Choose a category: My friend Miss Hannah I love to read her blog because she is around my age. She is a very nice girl.

Wheat Tortillas

We got this recipe from Miss Amanda's Mama. We made them today.

Here are the ingredients:
3 C. wheat flour
2 tsp. Baking Powder
1 tsp. salt
5 TBSP. shortening
1 1/4 C. warm water

Mix together the wheat flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in shortening until it resembles coarse crumbs. Slowly add warm water and mix well. If the dough is too moist slowly sprinkle in a little bit more flour and keep mixing until stretchy, but not too dry.

Divide the dough in half and then half again. (Unless you want smaller tortillas then you can split it again.)

Lightly sprinkle some flour onto a dry surface and gently place the rolling pin into the center of the ball and begin to roll back and forth. We used a heavy marble rolling pin so we didn't have to push down very hard. Each time you roll, stop and flip over the dough. Keep doing this until it is thin and ready to go onto a hot skillet.

My mom helped me so I wouldn't get burned. Once the skillet is hot place the tortilla onto the skillet and cook 1 minute on each side. We put the tortillas onto a cooling rack until cooled all the way.

Then we put them into a Ziploc bag.
(*If you put them into the bag too soon the tortillas will condensate. Condensation is kind of like sweating. The heat from the tortillas in a bag will cause steam and then when the steam hits the bag it becomes water. This will make your tortillas mushy.)

A normal bag of wheat tortillas at the store costs us about $4 and we probably spent only about .50 cents or a dollar to make the same amount. We made 2 batches today. We will start doing this every week, because we eat a lot of Mexican food around here.

Next we want to learn how to make corn tortillas.

When you read ingredient lists or write down recipes be sure to remember these tips:
1. C. means cup.
2. tsp. means teaspoon.
3. TBSP. means tablespoon

When you mix flour, spoon it into the cup loosely and using a butter knife, slide across the top to get off the extra amount. It needs to be level. You slide across the top when you measure the Baking Powder and shortening too.

To 'Cut In' is a way of mixing in shortening and flour. You can do this two ways. We use a pastry blender. It has several small blades connected to a handle. You kind of chop and mix at the same time. If you don't have a pastry blender you can use two knives. One in each hand and crisscross them into the mixture.

Today my sister, Jessica, and I made a coffee cake for breakfast. This recipe came from my friend Miss Hannah. When we were making it, Jessica asked a question. "Why is it called 'coffee' cake when it doesn't have any coffee in it?"

If you know the answer can you tell me?

To be a Missionary

We had a really great preacher come to our church for Mission's Conference this last week. I went to a meeting on Saturday morning about reaching lost souls and here is what he said is very important in order to be a missionary.

1. Obey Jesus
2. Reach the lost
3. Ask the Holy Spirit for His power.
4. Prayer is the number one way to talk to God.
5. The Word of God is our number one Authority.

I need to remember to follow these guidelines and then I will know that I am making God happy.

Happy Grandparents Day!

I have many grandparents. First I want to tell you about my Non and Poppop. I was able to go to their home in Southern California many times. We always had fun in their pool and spa. When I was little I was only allowed in the spa with either my mom, Non, or daddy.

Poppop would make movie theater butter flavored popcorn and Non would give us fudgesicles. She would cut a small slit in a paper plate and put the fudgesicle in it. This would help us not to get chocolate all over the place. But it would get messy anyway. Just think, kids and chocolate...

Non and Poppop always make holidays fun and they get us fun trinkets from the craft fairs they like to go to. They sold their home and now they travel in their motor home. They get things from their journeys and share with us for our homeschool. It's neat to have them as our teachers when they come visit. We get to see them whenever they drive up to our area. They always call on our birthdays and sing to us, I like that.

When they come up we each get to take turns spending the night in their motor home and we get to choose where we go to dinner. I like when they take me to Applebee's and then for dessert I pick Dairy Queen. Then we watch a movie in their motor home. I like when they tuck me in at night.

For breakfast I like to make pancakes with Poppop. He makes very good pancakes.

Then I have Grampy. He is my daddy's dad. He lives in our town and each month he takes me on a date to a place called Jon and Bon's for forzen yogurt. But we call it Yogy. We play marbles and put together puzzles. We like to go tot the store to get brownies. :O)

My mom's parents are my Grandpa Kerry and Grandma Marsha. They live near Placerville, Ca. That's where Thomas Kincade is from. We go to Apple Hill in the fall and my grandma works at a deli up in Pollock Pines. In the winter it snows and we get to the snow with them. Gina likes to brush Grandma's hair and Grandma likes that too. My Grandma Marsha makes very good candy! Grandpa Kerry has a neat old Chevy Pick up that he built. He takes us for rides in it.

Then there's our Granny. She is my daddy's grandmother. She lives about an hour from here and is over 70 years old. She drives up for all of our birthdays and takes us to Applebee's for lunch. Then the people come out and sing Happy Birthday to us. Granny always sends us cards in the mail for our birthdays and for holidays. She puts gliter and confetti in our cards. Then she puts fun stickers all over them too.

I love my Granny. She had eye surgery a while ago and will need another surgery like it again soon. We don't know if she can still drive up here, but we are going to drive to her home very soon and visit her there. She is a lot of fun and very thoughtful.

I love all my grandparents very much!

Welcome to The Jelly Bean Palace. My name is Gina and My mommy is Sisterlisa. My mommy writes at Growing in Grace's magazine for girls with my two sisters, Miss Jess and Miss Monica June.

I want to tell you about my favorite places to play games and about how much I love my family. I hope you will come back and visit me again soon.
